ABOUT Debora*

Debora* was attending primary school when the perpetrators of her abuse would pick her up. She was threatened, intimidated and given money to stay quiet. She hid the abuse for months and then her pregnancy for as long as she could for fear of being in trouble. Her parents discovered her pregnancy and told her they would help her be safe. She trusted her parents and told them who had assaulted her. They confronted the perpetrators as they were known to the family and then went straight to the police.

She has come to the SHE Rescue Home as a safe place to live while the court case is ongoing and her village is unsafe. We were hoping she would have time to settle in and meet all the girls in the home but she only had two days before going into labour. The baby developed a fever and was rushed to the ICU. His condition continued to deteriorate due to underlying health conditions and passed away. The house mother's are helping her grieve and recover.

She enjoys relaxing by watching movies while snacking on grapes. Her favourite meal is a Khmer soup called Korko, especially with fish.

Debora’S* FAMILY

Debora* comes from a large family. She is one of 7 children. Her father is a fisherman and her mother looks after all of the children. Both of her parents have mental health struggles and this impacts their ability to work and the family struggles financially. This kind of poverty is one of the vulnerabilities that human traffickers and sexual predator’s exploit.

Debora’S* FUTURE

Debora* will stay at the SHE Rescue Home while she heals. She will go to a school designed to help her catch up on missed years of schooling. Her counsellor will make sure she has all the support she needs to heal and her social worker will work with her family to ensure their home is a safe option for future reintegration.
