ABOUT Panha*

When Panha* first entered the SHE Rescue Home, she faced immense challenges considering her future. However, through years of dedicated support, she has grown in confidence, built strong relationships, and developed into a hardworking and independent young woman. She was reintegrated to our SHE Transition Home, a semi-independent safe haven for girls 16 -20 years old who require a safe place to live while they remain in the city to complete their education, vocational training or employment.

Panha* came to the SHE Rescue Home in 2019 after she was tried to visit her mother, who was working in Thailand. The service her mother hired to get her across the border was a front for sex trafficking. She was found abandoned on the border and kind strangers helped her get support and reported her case to the police. The perpetrators have been caught but the court case has stalled in the past six years.  She has had to testify multiple times in a Thai court, reliving traumatic experiences as she sought justice against her perpetrators. Efforts to ensure her current case is prosecuted remain a priority.

Panha* left school when she was eight year old to help look after her younger siblings. Since being in the SHE Rescue Home, she has worked hard to catch up to with other students her age. Once she had completed primary and middle school, she applied for and was awarded a scholarship to continue her studies at a private school. She has also been receiving English tutoring, further expanding her future opportunities. She is on track to being able to go to university.

Panha’s*, siblings all live with their grandmother in a rural province of Cambodia. She doesn’t have a relationship with either of her parents but she has maintained a close relationship with her brother and sisters. She worries about her sister’s behaviour and her difficulty in following family guidance. This has been a source of emotional stress for Panha*, but she remains committed to staying connected and offering support where she can.

When Panha* first came to the SHE Rescue Home, she didn’t connect with the other girls, was often confrontational and lashed out at others. She also struggled to make friends at school for the same reasons. Over time, Panha’s* social skills improved significantly, allowing her to form stable friendships with the other girls. She enjoys spending time with her friends every Sunday.

Looking to the future, Panha* has big dreams. She hopes to pursue university studies, and we are committed to providing her with psychoeducation and continued support to help her navigate social situations, maintain her emotional well-being, and work toward her goals. We will also follow up on her legal case and stay connected with her family to ensure her sister is receiving proper care.
