Community Based Care

Safety and support in Cambodia for girls aged 5 - 16 years who have been trafficked or exploited.

girls in community based care

In some cases, it is safe for young girls to remain at home in the care of their families. These girls however, still need services to successfully and fully heal from sexual exploitation and abuse. In these cases, we have our Community Based Care Program that exists to serve and meet the needs of these children right where they’re at, instead of bringing them into the SHE Rescue Home. This allows survivors to be surrounded by family and loved ones while they heal and recover!

Support we provide

It is only safe for a survivor to remain at home if her perpetrator has been arrested and she is no longer at risk. Every case is thoroughly assessed for this reason. In addition, through our Community Based Care Program, every survivor is afforded access to counselling, social work support, and education services for her and her family. We work to holistically heal survivors right where they’re at in their homes and communities.

We welcomed our first survivor into our program in 2017 and are encouraged at the impact we have had on the ongoing threats to our girls and their families that lead to further abuse or trafficking.

how we help

Education: Every girl in our care is given the gift of education. We cover all the educational expenses - school fees, books, uniforms etc.

Vocational: For girls 15 or over, we have the option for vocational training with many of our partner organisations offering vocational training programs.

Therapeutic: Each girl within our community based care project has regular contact with a counselor and social worker. These are essential relationships for the girls in their healing and restoration journey. Our counsellors provide specific trauma therapy for every girl, along with emotional support, where the girls can share about their days, their relationships, their families, and their fears.

Family Support: Our social workers work closely with families to help equip them to be able to receive their daughter back into their care. This process involves life skills training, employment assistance, vocational training, and sometimes involvement within our Family Assistance Program. Family support has also involved us building and repairing houses, helping communities access clean water, gifting pigs and chickens to families and educating communities. The aim of our work is to always be able to build a safe, supportive, and stable family and community.

Medical: All girls in our community based care receive regular medical care, including vaccinations, dental, optical, and any other necessary care.
